The spring weather has arrived just in time for spring activities to begin at Triton, and the track and field team has enjoyed some great outdoor practices already! With a record number of athletes out, we can’t wait to see what the season holds – and how much growth and improvement we’ll be able to see over the next few months!
The Cobras will kick off the season on Saturday, March 22 with a Gopher Conference indoor meet at Minnesota State University Mankato. Outdoor meets are set to begin the following week, with a junior high meet at Elgin March 25.
We’re looking to our seniors to step into leadership roles this year, and they’re already doing a fabulous job setting the tone. Craig Knutson, Olivia Weber, Romina Medina, Miguel Martinez, and Isaiah Selthun bring positive energy to practice, and are also some of our key returners in both track and field events.
Returners that already hold places on the all-time Triton top-10 lists are Pierce Petersohn (400, 800, 1600, HJ), Brady Staub (discus), Knutson (discus and shot put), Weber (100 and 300 hurdles, HJ), Autumn Froyum (800, 1600), Averee Henslin (100, 200, 400), Angel Mata Colin (1600). They’ll all look to improve their positions, while other athletes will look to break into the record books.
The coaching staff is looking forward to working with all of the athletes – one of the best things about track and field is that times and distances keep improving for all athletes throughout the season. Returning coaches include head coach Kim Swanson, and assistants Shelly Bungum and Tony Bendickson. Returning volunteer coaches are Bruce Huber and Greg Selthun, and we’re excited to welcome Adam Anderson, Carolyn Isaak, and Lauryn Nauman to our crew. That’s a lot of years of track and field passion to share with our kids!
Triton is set to host 8 meet dates throughout the season, including the Section 1A Champtionship meet May 27 and 29. Regular season meets will be March 27 (JH), April 3 and 11 (varsity), April 22 and May 2 (JH), and May 16 (varsity). It takes a village to host these meets; if you’d like to be part of the action and help out with measuring, moving hurdles, or announcing, reach out to Coach Swanson at kswanson@triton.k12.mn.us. We’d love to get you involved!!!
GO COBRAS!!
