When I first ran for County Attorney in 1994, it was because I felt we needed a person who was committed to the people of Dodge County and would strive to ensure our residents were treated fairly, especially in criminal matters. In the beginning of my tenure, I had an assistant attorney who handled the bulk of the prosecutions, and shared that same opinion. With his retirement, I was faced with difficulties handling the criminal portion of the office’s responsibilities. We attempted to fill the position several times but were unable find a long-term candidate who fully understood criminal law, could competently handle court appearances, and work well with the sheriff’s office - a clear imperative. During a short period, we even received assistance from Tim Woessner in Dodge Center and the Olmsted County Attorney.

It became clear that the office needed an attorney who was fluent in criminal law and could swim well in that lane. The Office’s practice was becoming and continues to become more difficult with the cases increasing in severity and becoming more complex. Hiring the right person was an imperative, but very difficult as there were many counties in the same position. However, in the end Kailee Thompson applied for our position and was hired. The decision was easier for me being a hockey dad, I knew that a person who played forward for Hill Murry hockey was going to be a force to be reckoned with and not easily pushed about.

In discussions - especially recently, it has become clear that Kailee and I share the same values and beliefs about the office and its responsibility to it residents of Dodge County; expecting compliance with the laws and ordinances but also showing compassion, empathy and understanding of people’s unique life situations.

Ms. Thompson has not disappointed and with all this being said I would recommend and endorse Kailee Thompson for the position of Dodge County Attorney.

Sincerely,

Paul J. Kiltinen
